Motion correction of contrast-enhanced image time series is a special case of image registration, where two types of motion and variations are present and visible in the images. The first type is motion and deformation of tissues as a result of breathing or pulsation, while the second is variation of contrast agent concentration. To correct for motion resulting from breathing and pulsation, the registration method needs to be unaffected by intensity changes caused by the accumulation and excretion of the contrast agent. In this work, we focused on multi-modality registration techniques, which enable the registration of images with complex intensity dependencies. In our case, these techniques were able to deal with the invariance to the presence and flow of the contrast agent. Thus, individual images of the time series can be independently registered to the selected reference frame. The results obtained were validated with synthetic images simulating real movements and variations and with actual acquired images, both from clinical and experimental studies. In the synthetic images, a subpixel accuracy was achieved, while in the clinical cases, the results were good enough for the accurate quantification of the contrast variations on pixel-by-pixel basis. | |
