In this paper we summarize and discuss the results of ground-based radar, radiophysical and geodetic studies at the surge-type Fridtjovbreen collected before (1977-1988) and after (2005-2007) its second known surge, which took place in the 1990s, and the available data on geometry of the glacier, derived from Norwegian topographic maps (1936, 1990) and recent satellite ASTER images (2004, 2006). These studies include: 1) radar measurements along single profiles at frequencies of 620 MHz in 1977 and 1988 and 20 MHz in 2005; 2) full-glacier radar surveys at 8 MHz in 1988 and 20 MHz in 2007; 3) radio wave velocity measurements in 1977, 1979, 1988 and 2005; 4) geodetic survey of the glacier surface elevation in 1988. | |
