Abstract
Temporal modulation instability (MI) of cylindrically symmetric spatial solitons can explain the origin of axial and conical emission, temporal splitting and shocking, as observed in light filaments, in an unified way. The dynamical Y waves and X waves emerging from the soliton instability closely reproduce the filamentary dynamics.
