Friction Stir Processing of AA6061-T4-Cold Rolled vs. As Cast

The paper approaches the behaviour of AA6061-T4 cold rolled vs. as cast, both processed by Friction Stir technique. This was assessed by using microstructural analysis, HV microhardness tests and residual stresses measurements. The transversal compressive residual stresses found on the processed layer are obtained by using the ¿cold working¿ Friction Stir Processing conditions. The compressive residual stresses are considered beneficial for reducing the crack propagation speed, and for increasing the loading capability of the structure.
