This paper contains the estimation of the mechanical properties of the timber of an ancient structure in Valsaín (Spain). Wave velocity is used to estimate the modulus of elasticity (MOE) and bending strength (MOR). Probing tests based on penetration depth and screw withdrawal resistance are used to estimate density. The minimum value of density estimated by probing (384 kg/m3) can be used as a characteristic value for safety in strength class assignment, this being higher than the C18 strength class. The mean estimated value of MOE (10.517 N/mm2) and the minimum value as the characteristic value of MOR (28,1 N/mm2) can be used for the strength class assignment. Both values are higher than the C18 strength class. Finally, the characteristic value of density (384 kg/m3), mean characteristic value of MOE (10.517 N/mm2) and characteristic value of MOR (28,1 N/mm2) estimated with NDT can be assigned to a C22 strength class for structural analysis. | |
