After successfully using non-destructive methods in previous projects to estimate the physical and mechanical properties of wood based panels, this paper proposes studying the relationship between aging, physical and mechanical changes, and non-destructive measures. We tested 192 pieces of different types of boards (standard and humidity resistant particle and medium density fibre boards) to analyze their real physical and mechanical properties. The same properties were also estimated using non-destructive methods (probing, ultrasonic and acoustic wave velocity), during a physical and biological laboratory aging test. Given the results of statistical analysis it may be concluded that there is a strong relationship between the results of non-destructive testing and the decline in the physical and mechanical properties of the panels due to aging. We propose several models to estimate the density and mechanical properties of boards (MOR, MOE), as well as their degree of aging. The best results are obtained by acoustic methods. We also obtain a high level of reliability in predicting degree of deterioration (aging) of boards using multivariable discriminant methods. The success rates vary from 85% to 100%, depending on the tool and the type of board.
