This work aims to point out an important aspect to be taken into account in the restoration of some singular façades. Attention is focused on the sgraffiti that cover the walls of many palaces and houses of Segovia, a town located in the geographical centre of Spain, renown for its Roman aqueduct. Many Segovian façades have been decorated with sgrafitti long since, characterizing her own aesthetic and popular architecture. Most of these sgraffiti are repetition patterns ¿regular mosaics and friezes¿ that can be studied from the point of view of geometry, due to the symmetries they present. The mathematical theory of symmetry, developed at the beginning of the 20th century, classifies the friezes of the plane in 7 algebraic groups, called frieze groups and the regular mosaics in 17 algebraic groups, the wallpaper symmetry groups. Given a frieze or mosaic model, the symmetries ¿translations, reflexions, rotations, glides¿ that leave the model unchanged are used to identify its symmetry group. With this information it is possible to restore the sgraffito in a faithful way, even when some part of it is severely degraded or missing. In this work, symmetries of numerous sgraffiti friezes in the town of Segovia were analysed to classified, and all of seven frieze groups were found. Counting the different sgraffiti models for each frieze group their frequency distribution was also obtained. Knowledge of this distribution can help prioritize restoration of those sgraffiti belonging to less frequent symmetry groups, which are facing extinction. The old town of Segovia and its aqueduct were declared a World Heritage Site in 1985, and all of us should try to contribute to the future conservation of its singularity and its cultural legacy. In this work a new perspective is proposed to assess that cultural richness that has to be preserved. | |
