The pressure field during wave impact events is difficult to characterise from a deterministic point of view. Attempts to have such a description relying on the analysis of the first impact events together with uncertainty assessment have been performed and are documented in this paper. In order to investigate the nature of the impulsive pressure computations, results obtained with state of the art SOLA-SURF finite difference and SPH codes have been compared with experiments for a rectangular tank, longitudinal section of an LNG tanker, subjected to pitch motions. Results have revealed the great complexity of the phenomena and the strengths and weaknesses of the numerical approaches. | |
