In the framework of the Semantic Web, ontologies are the knowledge organization systems that have shown most suitable for providing meaning or semantics to the Web. Up to now, most ontologies have been developed in one language. However, international organizations dealing with multilingual information have explicitly expressed the need for multilingual ontologies, which are deemed more and more necessary on the light of globalization. For this aim, ontologies have to undergo adaptation to a certain language and culture, a process that has been referred to as ontology localization. The aim of this paper is to analyze the process of localization from the perspective of the Functionalist approaches to translation, and present the main strategies that are currently being applied in the localization of ontologies. | |
