| The School welcomes Alvaro Ramirez, from Polytechnic University of Madrid,who is visiting Sydney to complete his research project on the collapse of silos. In this research work three full-scale steel silos with different eccentric hoppers (0%, 50% and 100%) have been tested using wheat and maize as stored materials. Pressure distributions have been obtained, by using pressure cells around the silo wall at three levels in the three silos and along a vertical section at twelve levels in the silo with concentric hopper. Pressure measurements obtained were compared with the Eurocode and interpreted considering two effects regarding the pressure cells. The first one was related to the lack of stiffness of the cell plate and the second one was related to the local imperfection caused due to the mounting procedure of the cell in the silo wall.Finite element analyses based on the interaction between the granular materials (wheat and maize) and the plate of the cell as mounted in the silo wall could be developed by using ABAQUS program in example to ensure and clarify the influence of the effects aforementioned when pressure cells are measuring in the cylindrical part and the hopper for the filling and discharge processes. Alvaro will be advised by Honorary A/Prof Peter Ansourian during his time at Sydney. Peter has over 30 years experience in research into plate, shell and silo behaviour. Alvaro also spent several months in 2004 with Michael Rotter and Jin Ooi at the University of Edinburgh, UK. Michael was an Associate Professor at Sydney, and Jin Ooi was one of Michael's PhD students, before moving to Edinburgh in the 1980s. It is pleasing to see existing academic links being maintained and expanded through visits such as those by Alvaro. | |
