This work describes a telemedicine solution based on a wireless network infrastructure fitted for the region of Caucan Pacific in Colombia. The healthcare infrastructure in this zone is scattered in a huge area of rainforest, far from main roads and electrical power supply. In these areas it is quite difficult to install wired systems of telecommunication because of the lack of electricity and roads conditions. The medical assistants continuously face problems due to the isolation and it¿s impossible to maintain a constant exchange of information with their reference doctors and it is difficult for them to reach their reference centers. Thanks to a wireless solution based on WiMax technology some of these problems were solved. With this network infrastructure is possible to connect remote health centers to transmit information with reasonable bandwidth and reliability in order to use basic telemedicine applications such as chat for consulting, VoIp and file transfer. These applications are very useful to avoid long distance displacement and to improve the quality of healthcare centers. | |
