Descripción
Natural sliks and antropogenic oil spils can be detected on the ocean surface by means of Sinthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) from satellites. In order to detect the time of residence of an oil spill and also to distinguish it from natural tensiactive slicks, or weather patterns reflected on the surface of the ocean, it is important to study in detail the self-similar (fractal) nature of the ocean turbulence. Using multifractal box counting algorithm on different sets of images, a partition function based on the SAR intensity level was calculated using several manipulations to reduce the speckle, invering the images to the third power; this procedure improves the discrimination of the age of the spills.
