The development of scarce water resources in the Mediterranean Region has been very important to satisfy the high demands for food, drinking and industrial water of a population that at regional levels has increased substantially. The chapter analyses, in the first part, the past trend of the irrigation development and the future demand. It is evident that irrigation development has contributed substantially to increase the food security. From the point of view of the water resources irrigation development has been and continues to be the largest user. Although irrigation areas have been growing substantially over the last 25 years the possibilities for continue such trend appear small, exception made of few countries, due to scarcity of the water resources. The chapter also reviews the interrelations between poverty, hunger, gender with the development of the water resources and the increased agricultural trade | |
