Despite the strong potential of data model collaboration, there are few tools allowing the design and sharing of models online. This paper presents an experimental platform for generating representations of complex systems and data models. This tool is accessible online for fostering collaboration. The tool is based in a reaction-oriented model of information [marest06], which uses a text-based notation as a visual language. Arrows, as in chemistry reactions, represent interconnection or cause-effect relation. The handling of data structure or geometry is expressed in the language via indentation (as in Python), which maps to areas and sub-areas in the generated figures. Taking advantage of cloud and Internet-based computing the tool is available for the Exchange of Data and Models. The main service at infchg.appspot.com was developed on top of Google cloud. This addresses some collaboration issues by reusing the cloud features of open-access and scalability. This Modeling and Collaboration platform is presented through a series of examples, explaining the tool and uses. An STEP Express example in Beluga notation was generated from and stored at http://infchg.appspot.com/t/A3lX. Users can access data via a unique URL address, and anyone can produce a graphical representation of ideas. The tool allows users to update a model or to produce new images by simply changing the graph definition in its text form. To conclude, the experience with a prototype collaboration tool allowed users the creation of data models and its visualization, and gave a feedback which helped to debug and improve the tool and language. Recent developments fixed sub-areas bugs and repeated urls, and limited excessively-large requests. For future extensions, a demo code shows how to query the service from a Python or Php program. Another open interface, under planning, will let create plug-ins able to import models expressed in other formats. | |
