The CartoVIRTUAL Project aims to develop a solution for the access to the distributed Spanish-Portuguese map collections. The objective is to promote the cartographic heritage publication and to support the research works of historians and documentary experts. Therefore, the project take advantage of the standards and Web services of Spatial Data Infrastructures (SDI) and the dissemination of academic contents through learning platforms. Thus, the project will deal with the development of a National Virtual Map Room prototype with the same advantages of real map libraries, promoting interoperable and opensource services to search and access to historical resources. Beyond the distributed access to all resources and the simple visualization, the project intends to provide new virtual tools for analysis and query of documents, favouring the safekeeping of documents and restricting their physical access. This paper describes the last technological advances and the new challenges to face in the future.
