This manual proposes a set of Hydrologicl Alteration Indicators (IAH) which permit the objective, efficient assessment of changes in the most environmentally important components of the flow regime caused by water resource exploitation. The process consists of two main stages, aimed at defining the natural regime as a reference state, and the assessment of hydrologic alteration via these IAH. The end result is the evaluation of the hydrologic level and the environmental diagnosis of the river reach being studied. The methodology presented in this manual can also be used to identify the major aspects of the flow regime which influence the renewal or recovery of a regulated river reach, and to define objective criteria for priorities in the restoration of freshwater ecosystems. The scientific community and water resource managers are thus presented with an instrument to characterise the state of water bodies that is required by the Water Framework Directive. | |
