Structural analysis through HPLC / mass spectrometry (3) revealed that the signals produced by Rl UPM791 correspond to: C6-HSL, C7-HSL and C8-HSL, produced by rhiRI; 3OH-C14-HSL, a bacteriocin synthesized by the chromosomically-located system cinRI; also, small amounts of C4-HSL have been detected. To study the role of these quorum sensing signals in Rhizobium-legume symbiosis, different competition assays for nodulation of pea roots by Rl UPM791, Rl 3841 and derivative strains affected in AHL production have been carried out. This analysis revealed that disruption of bacterial quorum sensing signaling significantly affects the competitiveness of strain Rl UPM791 vs Rl 3841, suggesting a relevant role of AHLs in nodule occupancy. | |
