Datos
Descripción
Very high accident rates are occurring in the forest harvesting sector in Spain. The severity of the present situation has been analyzed using accident records of a forest Spanish company and comparing them to official statistics regarding the agricultural and building sectors. Based on the preliminary results of this study, a regional survey including 35 visits to the most significant types of harvesting operations in Castilla and Leon Region has been designed and carried out, providing conclusions regarding the main problems that lead to the high accident rates. Some structural causes, besides legal, educational and other constraints have been identified, and a number of possible actions to improve them are hereby proposed. In addition, the work safety policy of the studied forest company has been analysed in detail. Their success in reducing the accidents frequency number and the accidents severity has lead to reductions of near 60% in both aspects (measured by the number of accident per 1000 work hours and by the length of the medical licence). The measures applied to get this first success and the constraints found in going ahead have been analysed and a number of recommendations for the involved enterprises and the Forest Services are provided.
