Advancing the paradigm of Ambient Intelligence through the harmonisation of Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) technologies will be the main challenge facing the European project “PERSONA”. It offers affordable solutions for the independent living of Senior Citizens.
Finding solutions and developing AAL Services for social inclusion of elderly citizens living, as well as, providing support in daily life activities and personal protection from health and environmental risks are some of the main challenges that the project “PERSONA” (Perceptive Spaces Promoting Independent Aging)” faces. Through this project researchers from European countries are studying, how to develop the paradigm of Ambient Intelligence through the harmonisation of Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) concepts, for the development of sustainable solutions aimed at the independent living of Senior Citizen, integrated in a common semantic framework.
Technical University of Madrid (UPM) is one of the main partners responsible for providing the technical support to this project. It is the leader of several technical work packages. Among them, WP 2.4, ALL services development, WP 3.7, Pilot technical validation and WP 4.2 Training). Also, it has a significant portion in the participation of activities related to user modeling and technological development. Furthermore, UPM leads all the tasks within the project associated with user interaction and multimedia interfaces.
On one hand, this project will provide the keynote address to develop a scalable open standard technological platform. It will build a broad range of AAL Services to demonstrate and test the concept in real-life implementation by assessing their social impact and establishing the initial business strategy for future deployment of the proposed technologies and services.
The development of a technological platform is other objective that the European project “PERSONA” will carry out. Also, it hopes to demonstrate that the solutions found will be affordable and sustainable for those involved such as the stakeholders, elderly citizens living, welfare systems and services providers in the ALL market.
In this manner, the PERSONA technical platform will exploit and incorporate a broad range of relevant technologies which are integrated in the project. Among them, A.L.L systems reference architecture, micro-and nano-electrics, embedded systems, Human Machine Interfaces, software web and network technologies, biosensors, embedded and distributed sensors, energy generation and control technologies, and intelligent software to tools for decision support. An important measure of success for this project will come from the results of the evaluation and validation in extensive test-beds, as well as, the trials in the three sites in Spain, Italy and Denmark.
The estimated budget for this study totals to nearly twelve millions of euros. It is developed by an European Consortium composed of institutions and universities. Among them are the Italian companies Vodafone Omnitel, which is one of the coordinators, Ratio Consulta and the university Universitá de Pisa. The participants on behalf of Spain are, the university, Technical University of Madrid (UPM), Fundación Vodafone España, and the Council for the Extension of Studies and Scientific Research. Additionally the company Philips International from The Netherlands and Siemens Aktiengesellschaft from Denmark will take part in this project.
