12. PhD Degree with European Honours

The qualification “European Honours” may be included on the obverse of the PhD Degree under the following circumstances:

a) That, during the education necessary to obtain the PhD Degree, the PhD student has carried out a minimum stay of three months out of Spain at a higher education or research and at a centre in a Member State of the European Union. The PhD student will have carried out studies or research work recognised by the university.

b) That part of the PhD thesis, at least the summary and conclusions, has been written and presented in one of the official languages of the European Union other than any of the official languages in Spain.

c) That the thesis has been guided by a minimum of two experts belonging to a higher education or research institute in a Member State of the European Union outside Spain.

d) That at least one expert, belonging to a higher education or research institute in a Member State of the European Union outside Spain, holding a PhD degree, and different from the person responsible from the stay mentioned in section a) and those mentioned in section c), make up part of the panel of experts for the thesis.

The defence of the thesis has to be carried out at the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid.
