13. PhD Distinction Awards

The awards will be given to those who have defended their theses in the previous academic year, who have obtained the ‘cum laude’ qualification for an outstanding thesis and who apply for this distinction. The applications, addressed to the Head or Dean of the Centre, will be presented in the register within the period established by the PhD Commission of the UPM. The proposals that justify the awards will be formulated in the centres, prior to the application for a report from the Academic Commissions of the PhD courses taken by those aspiring to win the award. These proposals, together with the applications for the interested parties, will be passed on to the PhD Commission of the UPM before the date established by the said Commission.

Those PhD theses taken in inter-centre departments will be considered as pertinent to the centre to which the thesis director belongs, only for the purposes of distinction awards. In the cases where the thesis director does not belong to the UPM, the PhD Commission of the UPM will establish to which centre the thesis belongs.

In the nomination that, where deemed appropriate, each Centre draws up, only one candidate in ten of the theses defended can figure in the previous academic year plus one, where deemed appropriate, for the fraction of the ten remaining.

The PhD Commission of the UPM will award the PhD distinction awards, which will all be of the same level.
