This project pretends to clarify the endogenous function of the barley C1A cysteine-proteases (CysProt) and their specific inhibitors (cystatins) in the mobilization of seed reserves during the barley germination. As the first part of my thesis, CysProt and cystatins involved in this process have been identify and molecularly characterized. To know the real role of these proteins is essential to produce barley transgenic plants over-expressing and/or silencing CysProt and cystatin genes, one by one, to clarify their specific function upon seed germination. Further transcriptomic analysis of these plants will allow the identification of sets of genes differentially expressed and correlate them to proteolysis process. | |
