The management of 670?000 urban trees in Madrid requires of arboricultural care in streets, boulevards, parks and recreational areas. This task can be improved by Computer-based Mapping in CAD (using AutoCAD®) or GIS (using ArcGIS®) where trees can be referenced with information from inventories, including the diagnose of problematic tree health and safety conditions that can be assessed using a Resistograph®. This device can detect hidden tree cracks and cavities which are very common in honey locust (Gleditsia triacanthos) and plane tree (Platanus orientalis). This study presents the results of the inventories and maladies such as cavities, cracks, fungal and other signs of structural problems that were discovered during the monitoring in two crowded boulevards in Madrid. If structural soundness was in question, Resistograph® was very helpful to measure the resistance of wood as a diagnostic tool to help quantify the extent of sound wood and the risk for pedestrian | |
