Nuclear fusion as energy source will request the development of several Remote Handling (RH) technologies that can be independent or remote operated by a user. Nuclear fusion environment is strongly constrained by several factors such the dimensions and weights of the components, the high temperatures and mainly the active radiation that force to consider RH as a feasible strategy to operate such facilities. Future fusion energyplants similar to the Demonstration Power Plant (DEMO) will require an exceptional RH system to perform supervision and maintenance activities. Such tasks play a critical role in the overall management of a nuclear power plant since could avoid unexpected shutdowns. Besides RH has been successfully used in fission hot cells for a long time and also for more than 10 years in the Joint European Torus (JET) tokamak maintenance, improving the personnel safety by restricting radiation exposures and the availability of the machine by using hardened equipment to resist the critical operationa conditions. In this paper the requirements and features of the remote handling systems in nuclear fusion environment are discussed. | |
