Abstract
The application of nanotechnology to medicine ?for issues such as prevention, diagnosis and therapy? has produced big amounts of heterogeneous data. The use of information and communication technologies could help to launch and support medical research at the nano-scale. While traditional biomedical informatics (BMI) applications usually address information processing and management from public health down to molecular biology, nanoinformatics extends this to include the nano level. Current research at this nano level adds a promising new field, augmenting, and drawing on decades of research and experience in BMI. In such context, the international initiative ACTION-Grid, funded by the European Commission under the 7th Framework Programme (FP7), gives support to the development of this novel discipline, bringing together researchers from different geographical areas ?the European Union, the Western Balkans, Latin America, North Africa and USA? with expertise in areas such as BMI, Grid Computing, nanomedicine, public health, etc.
