During the first half of the twentieth century almost 3000 local slaughterhouses were built in Spain in order to improve the hygienic conditions of meat and facilitate its marketing. The increasing technical and hygienic requirements for this type of constructions since 1976 and their gradual replacement by more modern private slaughterhouses have led to the closure and subsequent abandonment of many of these buildings. This paper examines the typological and constructive characteristics of these buildings and offers several possibilities to deal with their reuse. | |
