This paper details the methodology and tools developed to assess the CDAs performed inside Madrid?s TMA, during the night time period, belonging to the RETACDA project. The objective of the assessment was twofold: 1) to evaluate the operational difference between a CDA and a non CDA; 2) to determine the range of benefits the CDA procedures deliver both environmentally (emissions of CO2) and economically through savings in fuel and flight time. The methodology was applied to approx. 1100 flights to Madrid Barajas airport in 2009. The fleet analysed was a mixture of Iberia?s long/medium and shorthaul fleet of AIRBUS family aircraft. The flights? operations were analysed from FL210 to the Final Approach Point (FAP/FAF). Aircraft recorded flight performance data, radar data and feedback from Pilots and ATC was used as the main source for the assessment. The paper notes how statistics is used to develop clear criteria to define and asses a baseline and a CDA operational profile overcoming the limitation of relying solely on performance models and subjective information (i.e. pilot?s reports).
