Abstract
Driving style is a key variable on which we can influence in order to reduce consumption and pollutant emissions. However, when optimizing this variable, other variables should be taken into account such as safety, comfort and travel time. In this way, it has been developed an algorithm based on Dynamic Programming that, knowing the geometry of the route, can advise the driver at all times on what the most appropriate speed and the right gear are in order to optimize an objective function that considers the consumption and time, respecting the constraints of legality and safety. To do this, it is necessary take into account the modeling of power train and engine consumption map. However, this calculation implies a high computational cost when it is used to calculate long routes which poses practical problems when the route can be varied frequently or when unexpected traffic events force to recalculate the speed profile. Therefore, this article proposes a solution that is closer to the optimum by simplified techniques. Thus, from the results provided by the Dynamic Programming algorithm, simple action rules for basic road sections are deducted leading to a nearly optimal solution but in a reduced runtime. Finally, the difference in the cost function between the optimal solution and the solution obtained by the approximate method is evaluated.
