The Agricultural Insurance System in Spain applies remote sensing to estimate vegetation indexes (NDVI) useful to estimate drought damages in grazed pastures (insurance line 133). Therefore, the insurance coverage of drought damage in pastures is the main tool to cover the expenses that arise when livestock needs supplementary feeding due to drought. In the counties of Vitigudino, Trujillo and Valley of the Pedroches in Spain the evolution of pasture drought insurance was compared from 2006 to 2010 with a grass growth mathematical model based on ecophysiological and environmental variables. Adding the decennial scores of extreme drought and mild drought, the ecological model showed a greater number of scores than the estimations provided by Agroseguro. The recommendation is to compare grass growth curves with the curves of evolution of the NDVI, to adjust both models. | |
