This paper describes the design and construction of an innovative system based on virtual reality in order to support cognitive rehabilitation to patients who suffer from the called Apraxia and Action Disorganization Syndrome (AADS). This kind of patients find too difficult to execute Activities of Daily Living (ADL) due to the loss of memory and capacity of carrying out sequential tasks or impossibility of associating different objects with their functions. The system developed at Universidad Politécnica de Madrid tries to act as a virtual therapist in order to reduce the dependency of being at hospital or rehabilitation center and provide self-rehabilitation at home. By this way, the system provides simulation of the task to be executed and feedback when something is being executed wrong by a haptic device and the image data from Kinect. A description of main projects related to stroke, patients to work with and the platform constructed are detailed in the paper. Finally, the results obtained in the experiments with healthy people are also shown. | |
