| ABSTRACT As we advance into the new millennium, university education and research are regarded as an asset for the progress and success of national economies rather than the cause of this progress and success. In Spain, university teaching is going through a changing process as a result of the common European goals set for higher education. The emphasis is now placed more than ever on research as the measuring criterion for promotion and recognition and above all as the preferable channel in peer evaluation and professional assessment. The aim of this paper is to show how the changes and challenges posed by current educational demands are transforming the role of teachers, values and practices, leading us to question the meaning of our profession and our goals for an academic career. From being teachers of Languages for Specific Purposes at a technical university like the UPM, we are now asked to teach general language knowledge and become experts in communication skills training. The new engineering curriculum has established a fixed entry level in language proficiency (set at B2) according to the Common European Framework in language learning and a number of credits for compulsory training in communication skills. This new approach requires high competence standards from lecturers and students in order to compete with other national universities and ultimately to align the UPM with leading international technical universities. | |
