Renewable energies deployment in Spain during the last decade has been so significant that in the year 2011 a third of the electricity consumption was produced by them. This article attempts to summarize the evolution of installed capacity of photovoltaic and wind energy and to analyze the effects that continuous changing subsidy schemes had on their development. In addition, the magnitudes of economic benefits provided by them have been estimated and compared with feed-in tariff total cost. Most significant economic advantages inherent to renewable energies are savings due to avoided greenhouse gas emissions whose rights dont need to be bought, savings due to prevented fossil fuel imports and, the less mentioned and valued, electricity price decrease caused by the merit-order effect. | |
