Combining the two key factors of high performance and low cost into a single solar cell is the major challenge of research on photovoltaics. It is not easy to conceive a practical approach to such a device if not based on thin film technology. Yet, it appears equally clear that current thin-film solar cells must upgrade their performance by some means in order to meet satisfactory energy conversion efficiencies. The incorporation of novel photovoltaic concepts, particularly the intermediate band solar cell, into thin-film technologies is expected to cross-fertilize both fields. In this chapter, we will outline the potential benefits of thin-film intermediate band solar cells (TF-IBSC) and describe two different approaches toward its practical implementation. Particular attention will be devoted to devices based on chalcopyrite absorbers, currently leading the efficiency records of thin-film solar cells, and characterized by material properties well suited for this purpose. | |
