Descripción
Many devices and technological solutions have become available on the market and the interest in applying those technologies to the monitoring, treatment and rehabilitation of several kinds of pathologies has consequently increased. Continuous monitoring of patients affected by Parkinson?s disease (PD) leads to improve the following and management of such subjects and allows the personalization of the treatment. Moreover, continuous monitoring at home offers all the advantages of the digital world. Clustering techniques, data mining technologies and pattern recognition algorithms can be applied to facilitate doctors? work. Synthesized the vast amount of raw data coming from the patients? home and provide doctors with statistics, trends and highlights of the patient status is the main challenge of the telemedicine systems. Recent works have thrown interesting results in the monitoring of PD patients. Wearable accelerometers attached to the limbs and chest of the patients allow the remote monitoring of motion symptoms i.e. tremor, bradykinesia or dyskinesias. Speech assessment using Personal Computer (PC) with a microphone can offer rich information of the disease. Special gloves have been used to perform standard tests of the Unified Parkinson?s Disease Rating Scale (UPDRS) from the patient?s home. Apart from monitoring, ICT have been used in several rehabilitation applications. PD patients could often sustain near-normal walking in the presence of objects placed across their paths, that phenomenon named kinesia paradoxa has been the rehabilitation approach followed in several systems. Applications for mobile and wearable devices present visual and acoustic cues which aim the patient to walk.
