Descripción
The cast of concrete elements had his origins in the very beginning of the cement and concrete technique. Since the first decades of the XIX Century figures as Vicat, Coignet or Monier in the last part of that Century had developed patents and methods to build a great variety of concrete objects for a wide variety of uses. However, bigger precast structural elements as components for building construction belong to a later stadium that only started after several decades of cast in place concrete construction. In the Netherlands the first experiences of prefabricated construction date from the years before the Second World War and are mentioned in the publication ?Nieuwe methoden in den utiliteitsbouw? edited by the Dutch Ency Cement company. The most important achievements, most of them of an industrial character, are nevertheless localized in the period corresponding to the first decades after the War, the reconstruction period. The aim of this contribution is to analyse the state of that technique in the Netherlands under the light of built examples and publications of the above mentioned years. Here we will limit our scope to non prestressed elements. The interest of many of the buildings and structures result of this incipient prefab technique is in many cases the singularity. They were not thought for big series or true industrialized processes but for the economy of the single building. The accuracy of their craftsmanship was in some examples of a very high level and the whole structures can be compared with concrete meccanos. Also of interest is the available information and advertising of the specialized companies devoted to this then experimental, field of concrete construction. The sources for this paper are the main technical Dutch publications of the period. The examples, discussions and articles have been never before translated to English. Additionally will be checked some relevant archives in the Nederlands Architectuur Instituut (NAi) in Rotterdam and the library of the Technical University of Delft. The consulted magazines and journals are: Bouw Bouwkroniek Cement Forum Polithecnisch Tijdschrift Bouwkundig Weekblad Katholiek Bouwblad
