An AIP (air independent propulsion) system is any type of system able to allow navigation of a submarine vehicle underwater, with total independence of the earth atmosphere. Hydrocarbon-oxygen based AIP systems on board submarines (with these two substances carried inside the submarine) need to remove great quantities of water and CO2 produced during its operation in submerged condition. Production of CO2 (in gaseous state) in large quantities onboard a submerged submarine is an important problem: at this moment there is no easy way to store it onboard, and its expulsion outside the submarine needs to be carried out in a silent and low energy consumption way. | |
