The contributiontoglobalenergyconsumptionoftheinformationandcommunications technology (ICT)sectorhasincreasedconsiderablyinthelastdecade,alongwithits growingrelevancetotheoveralleconomy.Thistrendwillcontinueduetotheseemingly ever greateruseofthesetechnologies,withbroadbanddatatrafficgeneratedbytheusage of telecommunicationnetworksasaprimarycomponent.Infact,inresponsetouser demand,thetelecommunicationsindustryisinitiatingthedeploymentofnextgeneration networks (NGNs).However,energyconsumptionismostlyabsentfromthedebateon these deployments,inspiteofthepotentialimpactonbothexpensesandsustainability. Inaddition,consumersareunawareoftheenergyimpactoftheirchoicesinultra-broadband services.ThispaperfocusesonforecastingenergyconsumptionintheaccesspartofNGNs by modellingthecombinedeffectofthedeploymentoftwodifferentultra-broadband technologies (FTTH-GPONandLTE),theevolutionoftrafficperuser,andtheenergy consumptionineachofthenetworksanduserdevices.Conclusionsarepresentedonthe levels ofenergyconsumption,theircostandtheimpactofdifferentnetworkdesign parameters. Theeffectoftechnologicaldevelopments,techno-economicandpolicy decisionsonenergyconsumptionishighlighted.Ontheconsumerside,practicalfigures and comparisonsacrosstechnologiesareprovided.AlthoughthepaperfocusesonSpain, the analysiscanbeextendedtosimilarcountries. | |
