The future of many Mediterranean species relies on their capacity to endure new climatic contexts. Climate change episodes may be characterized by an increase of dryness at local and regional scales. The genetic background is important in determining tolerance to drought. Stressed plants undergo adjustments at different scales in order to maintain the needed degree of homeostasis. These changes can be observed at different scales, from transcriptome to metabolome level, as well as with respect to physiological response of different organs or full individuals. In recent years, considerable advances in the comprehension of the mechanisms underlying plant responses to water deficit have been achieved. However some questions remain unknown mainly related to mechanisms involved at different scales from gene to the whole plant [1]. | |
