Abstract
"Location of ground station antennas sites is especially important in complex missions that include several small satellites in LEO orbits. In these projects, satellites are tracked from a single ground station during few minutes a day and, sometimes, these facilities have to track several spacecraft simultaneously. Small satellites also have limitations like the amount of power available for communications. Therefore, an optimization of the design and operation of the ground station facilities may suppose a big leap forward in the overall system performance. Under these assumptions increasing the contact time between the satellite and the ground station involves an increase of the data downloaded. Additionally, interferences with nearby communications systems and disturbances of surrounding buildings/structures, must also be taken into account when it comes to select a proper location for the site of the antennas. These latter optimization elements may become very important especially for the location of urban ground station facilities."
