The SN-VII contract on NEO Impact Effects and Mitigation Measures was carried out from May 2012 until August 2013. Its general objective was to perform an assessment of the state of the art of NEO impact effects and potential mitigation measures. In terms of impact effects, this meant in detail that simulation tools were reviewed, missing capabilities assessed and required measures and efforts to fill the gaps identified. The presentation thus included the introduction to different existing tools to assess entry effects on NEOs, to simulate atmospheric entry effects, ground and water impact effects, and to estimate human and economic damage. While these tools provide valuable features and should be maintained, it was concluded that they should be expanded to include additional effects, such as radiative transfer or electromagnetic pulse generation. Additionally, these tools were regarded as rather specialized either on detailed scientific modelling of the physical impact effects or on general damage estimation with only high-level simulations of the physical effects. One major recommendation presented was thus to develop an Operational-Class Tool that would combine some of the existing tools and bridge the gaps in between them. | |
