This work describes the construction of various three-dimensional digital images that model, at different scales, the structure of a granular porous medium used as a filter for waste water treatment. The models are fitted to the data of porosity and particle size distribution measured in the laboratory. The construction of the models is based on the addition of digital objects that simulate the filter components (fibers and particles) to an empty image, placing them randomly in space, avoiding overlap between objects. A tomographic image of a real sample of filter is used to compare structural measures (such as pore size distribution) and to quantify the influence of the structure in the simulation of a water flow, this flow simulation is performed using a three-dimensional scheme of the lattice Boltzmann method. | |
