This study investigates how social factors determine the usage of corporate wikis to share knowledge in organizations. Our research seeks to cover the present gap in the study of the influence of social factors in knowledge sharing by means of a holistic approach, identifying relevant factors for successful knowledge sharing using 2.0 tools. Based upon extant research on knowledge sharing, technology adoption and relevant social theories, we identified the following influencing social factors: social influence ?consisting of three dimensions: subjective norm, social identity and group norm?, social anxiety and perceived critical mass. We have developed a theoretical model to explain the relation among these variables and their influence on two actual knowledge sharing behaviors: knowledge acquisition and knowledge creation/diffusion. The model has been empirically tested with a partial least squares (PLS) analysis of data from a sample of employees of the Information Systems department of a large industrial company (N=47). The results showed that social influence ?mainly, subjective norm? and perceived critical mass had effect on behaviors but social anxiety did not. Particularly, perceived critical mass was the most important predictor of knowledge sharing behaviors. The analysis is followed by a discussion of results and the relevance of findings. | |
