We present in this paper the Empiric k?p Hamiltonian that allows to obtain the energy spectrum and the subbandgap absorption of a nanostructured semiconductor device quickly and with moderate computing resources. Its application to a QD intermediate band solar cell is presented here. Realistic detailed balance equations are established with the calculated absorption coefficients and conclusions of the achievable efficiency of this type of cells are established. It is found that the light confinement techniques play a crucial role in these structures. | |
