Abstract
In this paper we evaluate the effect of large dams on several Spanish rivers. Measurements of active channel and riparian corridor dimensions downstream from the dams were done in gravel-bed, sandy and silty-clay rivers. Hydrological alteration and geomorphic responses were analysed comparing pre and post-dam flow regimes and pre and post-dam aerial photographs. Preliminary results shown that in non-cohesive (gravel and sand) substrata riparian corridor changes were better correlated to hydrological alteration than in fine, cohesive substrata, where observed changes were very variable and did not respond to the magnitude of the hydrological drivers.
