Descripción
Academic internationalization, professional orientation and multidisciplinary approach to handle complex urban problems are the three aims of Parallel Virtual Urban Workshops (PVW), a methodology developed at UPM using simple and low-cost information and communication technologies (ICTs). PVW has been implemented on three occasions: the first time in a joint workshop between UPM (Madrid) and MIT (Boston) in 2012; the second and third time in a collaborative workshop between UPM (Madrid) and UCL (London) in 2013 and 2014. Based on those previous experiences, an improved version of the methodology, called Multidisciplinary Urban Design Workshops (MUDW), will be tested in the near future. This paper focuses on the multidisciplinary issue, showing how it has been approached and how will be in the next workshop edition. PVWs have been quite successful in facilitating an understanding of how similar urban issues are addressed from different cultural perspectives, professional methods and institutional contexts through relatively simple and affordable tools. During one academic term, two groups of professors and students from universities located in different countries had to produce quasi-professional plans for neighbourhood regeneration in two different sites. Coordination and feedback among both groups was achieved by running several Skype sessions and by using a common blog. Besides the use of ICTs, an integrated methodology was critical to foster participation from professors with very different research interests such as urban ecology, forecasting, economic development, mobility, real estate and urban design.
