During antiquity, urbs, as opposed to oppidum, referred to an open city, a city without enclosing walls, directly connected to its surrounding territory and merged into its economic environment. Extending the historical physical notions of territory and economy, in order to encompass the virtual digital space and online activities as well, openness, today as yesterday, features as a key attribute of the so-called smart city, this urbs smartis transposed into the modern times. | |
