This paper aims to describe how language from a gender approach is represented in Maritime Engineering Journals and engineering texts from the internet written in English and Spanish from a qualitative perspective. This analysis is not only concerned to describe sexism in these academic journals, but also to study the way that point of view, agency or transitivity are unpredictably linked to matters of gender, mainly in Spanish texts. Engineering Language is frequently viewed as a mere tool for representing ideational meaning. Examples from lexis, linguistic forms and processes with images will show that Maritime language is also a material entity which also shapes ideas and Engineering practices. The language used by maritime engineers is part of a bigger system which determines what can be stated, mostly without the engineer?s being aware of any restriction. Social forces determine engineering language and this use of language has in turn an impact on society, in the sense it may reaffirm the status quo or challenge it. Keywords: Maritime Engineering, gender-bias, journals, lexis, sentence, discourse. | |
