A simplified two-dimensional amplitude equation has been recently derived by us (JFM 739(2014), 196) that provided the subharmonic instability threshold in horizontally vibrating containers, which match very well quantitatively with former experiments by Porter et al (Fluid Dyn. Res. 44(2012), 065501). Moreover, the equation also predicted the primary patterns, which were experimentally confirmed by Tinao et.al (Phys. Fluids 24 (2014), 022110). This equation can also be used in different configurations, such as in mixed horizontal/vertical vibrations and in cross-waves produced by immersed wavemakers, which were analyzed by Moisy et al (Phys. Fluids 24, (2012) 022110). An overview of cross-waves will be made using the above-mentioned amplitude equation, addressing issues such as obliqueness of the primary patterns, quasi-periodicity, and surface contamination, which is expected in experimental realizations using tap water. | |
