The organization of !he chromatin is a central element in !he regulation of master genes of plant developmental transitions. We have characterized the locus EARL Y BOL TING IN SHORT DA YS (EBS) that encodes a plan! specific transcriptional regulator containing a PLANT HOMEODOMAIN (PHD) zinc finger and a BROMOADJACENT HOMOLOGY (BAH) doma in. Our previous data revealed that EBS is required for !he repression of !he floral integrator gene FT. In addition, EBS specifically recognizes di- or trimethylated lysine 4 (K4) in histone H3 (H3K4me213) through !he PHD domain present in its carboxy terminus, and mutations in !he EBS gene cause an increase in !he levels of histone H3 acetylation in regulatory sequences of FT. Furthermore, EBS binds regulatory regions of this master gene of flowering , and interacts with histone deacetylases such as HDA6 (1 ). Altogether these observations indicate that EBS is necessary lo maintain a transcriptionally inactive conformation in !he chromatin of its target genes. In addition to ha ve a role in the control of flowering time, EBS is also involved in !he regulation of other developmental processes in plants. Our results show that EBS is required for !he proper regulation of master genes mediating !he transcriptional control of seed dormancy and reproductive meristem function. Advances in our understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying EBS activity in the modulation of gene expression and development will be discussed. · References 1.
