The Directive 2008/50/EC of the European Parliament and the Council states that harmful pollutant emissions for the human health and the environment should be avoided, prevented or reduced, and establishes thresholds values for air contaminants. Among these pollutants there are the NOx. The annual limit value fixed for NO2 is 40 ?g/m3, whereas for the hourly limit value is 200 ?g/m3, which must not be exceeded more than 18 times per year. In cities the threshold values are often unaccomplished due principally to the traffic. Regarding this, the PHOTOSCALING Project (co-funded by the European LIFE instrument) focuses on reducing air pollution and improving air quality by demonstrating the feasibility of the photocatalytic technology (direct and indirect possible deleterious effects of nanoparticles) in urban nuclei and creating the instruments for scaling up this technology from the laboratory test to the final application in our cities toppling the barriers that nowadays impede their use for the different stakeholders (efficiency, safety and durability). | |
